hadith about saffron – notes & reflections

06/01/2020

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saw me wearing two clothes dyed in saffron. whereupon he said: These are the clothes (usually worn by) the non-believers, so do not wear them.

[Sahih Muslim, Book 37 (The Book of Clothes and Adornment), Hadith 49 (The Prohibition Of A Man Wearing A Garment Dyed With Safflower)]

Note1: Quran together with its halaal tafsirs + authorized/approved (sahih) Sunnah traditions (with their Hadiths and Siras – which are respectively the traditions/experiences supposed to have been recorded by the associates of Mohammed Rasul and his biographies detailing various aspects of his life) form the backbone of interpretation of Islam.

There are various schools/fiqhs of jurisprudence and sects in Islam. But the basic/fundamentals for a given Islamic/Muslim are as in Quran & Sunnah – they override in-toto, any national/modern-state or local considerations. I know, BR Ambedkar agrees with me. Shariah über alles.

Note2: I think, finely grained directives and diktats like this ‘what NOT to wear,’ make the leading of our complicated human lives very simple and easy to navigate. No nagging questions are even needed to be raised about anything. No need to use the cerebral cortex. At all.

Every single/small detail of one’s life is taken care of, with specifics of what to do under what circumstances etc including what is the right time to have sexual intercourse, how to beat wives, while doing a hand-wave to feminists (of course, these species will swoon for the sweet gesture appropriately) et al.

In an otherwise, unpredictable world with so many forking paths, tiresome  & bewildering decision points, and with all the dilemmas trilemmas nlemmas kinda difficulties in trying to be a dharmic… … all one needs is a very comfortingly detailed handbook of how to operationalize/lead one’s life – with, the added bonuses of promise of goodies (even after one’s death) if one operates within those clear, precise, internally-consistent parameters. Secularism and Progress be damned. Oh what a relief! Arbeit Religionsarbeit macht frei. Yes.

Also, there are specific directives on what & whom to focus one’s unremitting hate on; it is a well established societal phenomenon that humans can be rallied easily around this focus rather than its opposites: respect & accommodation. So, it is systematically taught to hate Kaafirs. Yehudis. Polytheists. Murtads. Hate of the ‘other’ is thusly, completely internalized, period.

You are either with us OR totally subservient to us, the only other option being, your death, thanks. Ghazwa-e-Hind. Works like a charm, every time.

Hence, it is tempting for me to ‘convert.’ One can then be filled with another potent weapon: self-hate. This also helps sharpen the hate towards the ‘others’ as above, when it is oh so easily redirected. Again, this works like a charm. For an obvious proof – just look at the dhimmified media scum. If you can stomach more – just have a quick look at our cultural glitterati & assorted useful idiots donning their liberal, virtue-signalling vacuous smiles & costumes – and that inexorable, condescending smugness.

All the above (total submission, details of life left to handbook, hating the ‘other,’ dhimmitude, useful idiocy) are common practices/tactics/parameters with ALL olde and neo Abrahamic, rabidly proselytizing religions. Christianity. Islam. Communism. Socialism. Fascism (=the highest state of Marxism).

Note3: Of course, Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is different from Saffron (Crocus sativus); but the reference in the hadith is to the ‘colour’ Saffron. Though a huge part (~95%) of  the world’s supply of Saffron is from Iran (a Shia Islamic State) – for some reason, perhaps because of the colour of the clothing that are traditionally associated with Dharma, ‘Saffron’ is used as derogatory term to castigate Indics/Bharatiyas, by Coconut-case left-liberals and clueless/braindead Dravidians.

All these Coconuts/DraVoodoos who are against Saffron and use it as a way of belittling/castigating Dharmics, are actually against Islamic Iran & therefore are Islamophobes, the aforementioned Hadith & my notes notwithstanding.

You’d have seen pictures of Steve Jobs in his usual black turtle neck sweatshirt and Zuckerberg in his green collarless t-shirt. They didn’t want to waste time in trivial activities of dress selection every day.

For Muslims, their religion addresses this pain of choosing. Someone decided for them centuries ago and they’d live with it.

But let’s see what happens with choices for more serious things.

When going through the college admission hassles, my son said – options are a problem. His reason: when you have options, you’re often uncertain about the choice made – whether it’s right or wrong. If for any reason, it turns out to be wrong, there’s no acceptance and a lot of energy is wasted in thinking about the other options. If there’s acceptance, this energy could bring about creativity, peace and all good things.

If Muslims had total acceptance of the no-choice handed out to them, they should be spiritually at peace with themselves with happy families, creative poets, artisans and whatnot.

    • Hmm, I understand where you are coming from; but Sir, if that kinda peace, self-contendedness were to reign, then where is the question of making two clean divisions of the world, say, in terms of dar al-islam Vs dar al-harb… there would not be any kind of expansionism, no?

IMO, of course there are creative poets, artisans & fantastic folks etc etc – but they are there, in spite of all the terrible restrictions. (personally I know quite a few of them good folks)
