gajantaka, gajasurasamharamurthi – notes on the eve of shivaratri

21/02/2020

This is about one of my favorite murtis (sculptures or icons, if you will) at many levels/layers.

A twitter-thread on it. Gajantaka.

Another one, that makes me feel desolate, angry, angsty but also fills me with hopes of a civilizational recovery & resurgence, whenever I see it – is also represented in a twitter thread. Ugra Narasimha of Hampe.

  1. K.Muthuramskrishnan Says:

There is a beautiful stone image of Gajasamharamurthy at Thanjavur Palace complex museum.

  2. /Parvati is serene and is calming her terrified little child Karthikeya/Muruga who is rapidly climbing up on her – pacifying the child with abhayamudra./

    This is lovely.

In each of the gajasamhAramUrtis (adhAvadhu all 2.5 I may have seen) the sculptor seems have to had fun with the mother and child.

Here is one from pullamangai – shot exactly three years ago. The archakar had taken the day off after shivaratri and we had the glorious little gem of a temple to ourselves for over an hour

Far from அபயம் here, அம்மை is almost saying “யோவ், எதுவா இருந்தாலும் சொல்லிட்டு செய்யுய்யா..புள்ள பயப்புடுது!” and murugan is jumping from her hand to that of a nanny :-)

And all this drama in an incredible miniature that has been exposed to the elements for 10 centuries!
