automobile matters & futures*

…once a while some desperate parents contact me (me, of all people) to see what is possible for their child, given Chinese COVID, his/her interests/orientations, the concerns of the parents, what is available in India/abroad, prospects for a given field, how it is likely to develop etc etc.

* this has nothing to do with the stockmarket nonsense, of which I know little, anyway. It is actually & merely about the various kinds of futures that can be envisaged/imagined…

…But, I also hate faffing and against saying such useless homilies as, “money is not everything beta, pursue your passion…” + “You know, in those days, we had only one tube-light at home…” and the like.

Though it is easy to say general, ‘forward looking’ things, giving all-purpose stratosphere-level advice like, ‘time management is important’ – I avoid indulging in such free-flow highfalutin’ wisdom. I am no career-counselor.

Hence, I mostly revert with a resounding, unequivocal and a polite NO, either because I do not know anything about the field that the child is interested in or because I know the parents really well, since I do not like to gladly suffer fools.

Today, parents of a child, who is in his 10th grade came down and met me for a couple of hours, and the child’s interests were apparently in ‘things that move’ and in automobiles.

I used the following mindmap, to talk to them about my (of course, limited) perspectives on the important areas in science, engg and tech that would have an impact/bearing on the further development of ‘moving things’ and as to what are the basic attitudes that would be useful as also various career/progress possibilities. I plan to talk to the child separately.

Probably, I took approximately two mins per node. Various terms used are in normal lingo, and wherever a given term is not, can be looked up. I tried to answer various follow-up questions. Probably the session was useful to that family. Oh the hope.

Here’s a proper, pdf copy of the mindmap – if at all you are curious.

Enjoy or regret, or send your brickbats my way – as the case may be.

It is a great mind map.I am not being patronising ,plz.
I am also glad you don’t like ‘கொஞ்சம் அட்வைஸ் குடுங்க’ ,or the way I used to be sent referrals here , ‘ஒரு கவுன்சலிங் குடுத்துவுடுங்க மேடம் ‘.The problem will be a never ending Mahabharata ,but one session should settle matters. How I wish.

    • Sir, happy to be of service; but is this NLP that you are talking about – it is Natural Language Processing, and not that abominable Neuro Linguistic Programming, I hope!

That NLP (not mentioned in the mm) is on the careerpath node->tele-comm wherein a subpart/idea is to make the car ‘understand’ normal human vox and respond to it in some vox – after processing, transcribing and all that.

Self-driving is driving without human intervention (to a significant extent); this is becoming a kind of reality in container traffic between the east and west coasts of USA in the next few years, may be. It can work with NLP – but the idea is about science.

I talked about the attribs of a given kid and then talked about science – engg and tech in that order and then career and then maint etc – this flow may make a few things clear.

Science with a horizon of 15-20yrs and so forth.

Anyway, here’s hoping the staccato response is kinda useful to you somewhat.

When I read your posts ,the comment section and your replies ,I am reminded of my early teen years spent in understanding English .Keep looking up the books you mention in the web.

My father force fed English with books like Necromancer(‘have no clue even today), so to avoid his wrath I will sit with a dictionary to learn and understand .My டமில் medium was an impediment .But I don’t regret learning in Tamizh coz I am happy I know one Indian language reasonably well despite my mother tongue being something else .Atleast that is my delusion. ( oh no I am a வந்தேறி )

    • Welcome to the வந்தேறிclub. However, including a couple of original dravidian monkeys which had contributed to ‘muthar-sanga elakkiyam’ business – all of us are bleddy வந்தேறிs only.

Necromancer! I think you’ve been thru much. Your childhood trauma should not make you into, um, a chainsaw wielding Kali!

      From K to N, you’ve seen all!

You must give yourself some therapy. Please feel free. And, hurry up.
