The ‘lay of the land’ of the ‘future,’ our adolescent children & us – notes

12/02/2021

Another.

The earlier one was very limited to ‘Automobiles‘ – or things that move. There was one on ṛta, ऋत:

But. This is a mindmap (ver2.0 as of 12th Feb, 2021) created to address somewhat, the frequent demands for my highfalutin’ ideas – from some hapless parents-acquaintances of mine.

…and it is being shared in the hope that it may somewhat be useful for parents in ‘that life stage’ of bothering about their / their wards’ lives; their ‘career’ and how they have to be equipped appropriately etc etc.

In fact, in many cases, these hapless parents try to outsource the ‘thinking’ to me – and this is my way of throwing the ‘thinking’ right back at them, with my own twists and bizarreness.

It is a fun War, but a war none-the-less.

As my dear Harlan Ellison says:

“If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you; but if you really make them think, they’ll hate you.”

So. In a summary:

  • This is meant for ‘helping’ parents with adolescent children trying to ‘figure out future.’ For themselves and for their kids.
  • Treat this as an override-able template for thinking about & seeding discussions.
  • Am not trying to sit in value judgements over any idea, though my biases of course, show. Oh well. (for example, I do not consider ‘money’ as as a mean thing. I am for meritocracy. I am for balanced approaches. I am for competition (so I do not make stupid statements about ‘rat race’ etc – such talk is for Losers, end). I am For entrepreneurship/corporates. I am for Nuclear Power. And, the like – hope you get the drift)
  • These are Generalizations; therefore, there are a few exceptions, as always.
  • Things happen in combinations – not in splendid isolation. There is sufficient interplay between nodes. (discernment kicks in)
  • If there are some terms/nodes that you can’t figure out the meaning of, then Google may help. As for the context of such terms and annotations, you are welcome to make-up your own, beyond (or in spite of) what I am saying.
  • I have more questions & meta-ideas than answers; am no guru, am also a fellow-struggling individual.
  • This is a work-in-progress. Therefore – deletions, additions and modifications will happen. I am very aware of the open-endedness and the rather narrow ‘field of vision’ of mine, thanks!
  • These are my thoughts & ways of perceiving the world. Nothing more, nothing less.(So, an appropriate pinch or a tonne-load of salt is perhaps, mandatory)

In a given chat/desultory-talk, I do not deal with every aspect of every node – though there are some examples to elucidate what I am trying to say. This is a general taxonomized listing – will fit into an A4 side, landscape mode.

The whole, same-as-above mindmap, FWIW, in JPEG. (will open in another tab/page)

In pdf. (will open in another tab/page)

In the raw, editable form: mindmap – feel free to download & edit/modify/make your own. (you can use some google app, am sure – but I use Freemind).

…please note that there is NO copyright whatsoever for the Othisaivu stuff. There is no need to acknowledge the source too. Be on your own. With Blessings or Pranaams as the case may be.

Users beware, Caveat emptor, No guarantees or implied warranty.

Life is its own handbook & humanual, hic. RTFM.

YMMV, of course.

  1. Thank you for the mind map.

    Rta Means

I’m afraid this is secular. Where do you fit in the traditional practices – like daily Sandhyavandhanams for Brahmins to monthly/annual practices (like temple visits and associated rituals) for other Hindus? Habits like those do matter in the long run.

Sorry to nitpick – சகவாசதோஷம். Meta-cognition is misspelled.

    • Sir, thanks for the feedback/patience. I was wondering about the thundering silence, though so many downloads of the documents shared in the post, had happened. Anyway. At least 1/7.5 has read them; am glad to be of service.

      1. The context for the document was about a laundrylist of the parameters that a given parent (or parents) would have, to have a meaningful understanding about or discussion with the adolescents, about the ‘career’ and life in general.

1.1 See, I do not see the mm as ‘Secular,’ with all its negative connotations and practical nonsense in Bharat. OTOH, the narrative in mm is closer to being logical – mostly evidence based, given our (~my) human tendencies. The mm is about the world of ‘apara’ and not necessarily ‘parapara’ and definitely not about ‘para’ – though they are useful ways of understanding the ‘nature of reality.’ So, there is no direct scope of Ishwar/Ishtadevata in this – but is accommodated in 2.3, if they are all part of one’s dharmic pursuits and followed traditions.

      2. 1 The mm talks about Rta. Which is essentially what is sustained by dharma; if a given family/individual feels that doing rituals in dharma, then it is of course there.

2.2 Even from the PoV of the etymology of ‘ritual’ (erm, actually we should talking about samskaara here, and then chitta onwards – but then) – it is from the pIE root rē — which somewhat translates to ‘reason’ or ‘count’ – or as variant of it, ar etc – which means kind of ‘to fit or bring together.’ In essence, the negative connotations (not that you imputed them) of ‘ritual’ is fairly recent. They are actually meant for ‘reason’ and are done to bring things ‘together.’

2.3 From the above context, this ‘ritual’ handled in Questions/’Anything fluffy will not withstand the test of time’ + Thoughts&Tools/’Map is NOT the Territory’ + Thoughts&Tools/’Traditions are there for a reason’ etc; one has to do some function overloading – because, all the nodes in mm have to be interpreted in context. So no details have been given – but, one gives some examples while chatting – to better understand what the hell one means in the first place.

      2.4 I also believe in: Kalidasa’s Malavikagnimitram maxim, “पुराणमित्येव न साधु सर्वं न चापि काव्यं नवमित्यवद्यम्। … …”

      3. Thanks for the correction – this is no nitpick of course, you are most welcome to even kill me and purge me of mistakes thusly. In fact there are quite a few of them errors in the mm which need to be corrected. Will do the corrections for the next ver.

3.1 Those mistakes include, my obscene presumptuousness in the mm: ‘EmergentWorld/Artificial Consciousness (remember, you heard it first from me!)’ – actually, this AC has been quite well known and articulated for more than 1.5 decades now. But I have been talking about this for the past couple of decades (only talking, I mean) and I thought I should claim it; bleddy stupidity, should have checked.

      Anyway, thanks again.

Thank you very much. This couldn’t have been more timely. Will certainly be helpful for our daughter in choosing her major. A lot of her friends seem to know what they want to do in UG and beyond. (e.g. computational biochemistry, computational neuroscience). My daughter just knows she doesn’t like to do anything related to biology. We are tending towards CS – she likes to program and has proved herself to be a reasonably good coder. My choice was EECS. நான் C-யை வைத்து ஈயை ஓட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் ஒரு EE to CS convert, so biased. Pardon the punctuation and other errors.
